Earlier this year Upshotz held photography workshops in youth and community centres in the South London area. Participants were asked to think about peace and to question what it meant to them. ‘An Eye For Peace’ exhibition was born out of their hard work and insight.
The work produced was wide and varied and consisted of pictures of home, friends, nature, journeys and everything from the Houses of Parliament to family pets. Driving all this very creative work was the message of peace. It became quite clear all the young people involved had very definite ideas of what peace meant to them as young adults and the importance of peace in our communities. Giving young people a platform to express themselves has been a very rewarding experience for all of us at Upshotz and we look forward to doing it all again.
Upshotz wishes to thank all who attended the opening of ‘An Eye For Peace’ exhibition and all who made the event possible and indeed a very special occasion. A good time was had by all and the standard of work produced by our participants (some pictured above) was excellent. The event was attended by councillors, press, families, friends and members of the community. Needless to say the families of all the participants were very proud.
Our participants have also been the subject of some press attention, there was an article out on Monday 22nd June 2009 in the London Evening Standard and also an article in the South London Press on Tuesday 23rd June 2009. There was also a short piece on BBC London television as part of the Apollo project package. We are still awaiting articles in this months Lambeth Life, so watch this space and well done again to all who took part.
Upshotz is very encouraged by the feedback we have received from people in the community, local government and youth organizations. We are now trying to negotiate the next place to hang the exhibition and will also shortly be in talks to arrange future workshops.
